On Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was riding in a motorcade through Dallas when he was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. The murder left a deep impact on the nation, and nearly 50 years later, it remains an event rife with questions and controversy. In 11/22/63, baby-boomer King addresses the wistful desire to turn back time and make everything right again. In 2011, Maine school teacher Jake Epping discovers a time portal to 1958, and what begins as an attempt to help change the life of one of his students morphs into a mission to kill Lee Harvey Oswald in the hopes that Kennedy’s second term as president will head off the turbulent times to come.

Harmonica legend Corky Siegel recalled his first memory of Hanukkah, when he was about eight years old. “I remember the first candle being lit,” he said. “The first present I got was a harmonica.” Siegel quickly made up for lost time, though, and always dazzles audiences by his prowess on the instrument — as well as on a keyboard — when he plays with his Chamber Blues ensemble or Siegel-Schwall band.

Teens have a blast in outer space musical

Nora Foutty can relate intimately to her role in “Grace Shapiro, Space Hero!” the Music Institute of Chicago’s musical theater production premiering this week. “Grace is an incredibly responsible girl who is very bossy to her twin brother and I can be bossy too, to my twin, Ben,” admits Foutty. “Sometimes, I imagine her twin is a slacker even though mine is not, but I try to imagine her Michael as my brother and the complicated relationships of having a twin, which may be a little easier for me than maybe other people who aren’t twins.”

North Shore singers still do ‘Messiah’ themselves

Hallelujah! The “Do-It-Yourself Messiah” comes again, this year to the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Chicago’s Millennium Park.

“Members of our choir have gone for 25 years,” said Patricia Radosavljevic of Wilmette, who has been choir director at Carter-Westminster Presbyterian Church in Skokie for 29 years. “We went to Orchestra Hall, when it was presented by Al Booth and Margaret Hillis.” (Hillis was founder and first director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus.)

This year seven members of the 15-voice choir, plus the director, will drive down to the Harris and take their places according to voice categories — soprano, alto, tenor, bass.

Music is relative for Evanston’s Vamos family

She is particularly delighted that two of her sons married violinists — both of whom studied with Almita when the Vamos family lived in Minnesota and the couple commuted weekends to the Music Institute. “They are great girls,” she said. “We’re doing the Bach Concerto for Three Violins. I call it the In-Law Concerto!”

Friends and family members will accompany the concerto, under Roland’s baton.

There is a charge for admission, but Almita insisted nothing is going go to the musicians. “That charge is for the hall,” she said. “We are all family and friends — no one is being paid.”

The Vamoses have six grandchildren — four study musical instruments and two are still too young. “Wait five years,” Almita said. “Then, hopefully, they’ll all be playing with us.”

Even musical families, however, cannot persuade everyone to follow the muse. “Our brother Seth studied violin until he was 16,” Brandon said, “but now he’s in real estate.”

A report was made to FWP Monday about sheep coughing at Cinnabar Mountain. An FWP field biologist responded by observing the herd and evaluating the likelihood of the presence of pneumonia. Following the observation, two lambs were lethally removed on site and brought to the state wildlife lab in Bozeman for examination. Evidence of pneumonia was present in lungs of both lambs.Region 3 Supervisor Pat Flowers said today, “FWP is currently assessing the extent of the affected sheep in order to determine the appropriate response actions. Those actions might include culling in order to prevent the spread of the disease to healthy animals.”
